Does Marc Anthony Have a Prenup?

Oct 12, 2024 | Celebrity

Marc Anthony’s love songs have captured hearts around the world. They’ve also earned him considerable fame and recognition. His massive output has helped him earn status as one of the top-earning and top-selling artists in the world. Recently, he got married to Nadia Ferreira. Read on for more about this new marriage, including our prediction as to whether Marc Anthony and Nadia Ferreira got a prenup!

Who is Marc Anthony?

Marc Anthony is a singer and songwriter. He was born in 1968 in New York City and is of Puerto Rican descent. His first album When The Night is Over, a collaboration with DJ Little Louie Vega, situated him firmly within the house music and salsa genres and its single “Ride on the Rhythm” topped dance music charts. His next album and first solo effort, Otra Nota, received further commercial and critical acclaim and charted at #2 on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart. For this album, he was awarded “Best New Artist” at the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Throughout the early- and mid-1990s, he became known as an artist whose fusion of house and salsa was truly unique. His career reached the next level in 1997 with his third album Contra la Corriente, which received a Grammy award, a Latin Billboard award, and was promoted by a sold-out concert in Madison Square Garden and sold hundreds of thousands of units even before it was released. This album was followed by his true breakthrough into massive popular and critical acclaim, the self-titled album Marc Anthony, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and has since its release sold more than four million copies around the world.

Since his rise to stardom, Marc Anthony has won four Grammy awards and has sold more than 12 million albums. He has put his fame and wealth towards philanthropy, launching the Maestro Cares Foundation, which has developed orphanages and schools in the Dominican Republic and in Colombia.

Marc Anthony’s relationship history

Given Marc Anthony’s fame and acclaim, it is no wonder why his dating history is also filled with larger-than-life stars. He has been married four times. The first marriage was to Miss Universe 1993 winner Dayanara Torres, who he married in 2000 and with whom he had two children. His divorce from Dayanara Torres in 2004 was shortly followed by his marriage to Jennifer Lopez (Yes, THE J.Lo), which occurred later that same year. He and Jennifer Lopez had originally met in the 1990s, during the recording of No Me Ames, which was a song starring both singers that appeared on Jennifer Lopez’s breakthrough album On The 6. Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez enjoyed a very high-profile marriage that featured a sold out co-headlining tour (“Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony En Concierto”), co-starring roles in the movie El Cantante, and a joint stake in the Miami Dolphins. They had two children together. Upon their separation in 2012 and subsequent divorce in 2014, Jennifer Lopez retained custody of both children.

After getting divorced from Jennifer Lopez in 2014, Marc Anthony married model Shannon De Lima in 2014 — again getting married to a new woman in the same year he finalized a divorce (no shade, though!). Very shortly after this marriage began, in 2016, Marc Anthony and Shannon De Lima separated, and in 2017, their divorce was finalized.

Marc Anthony and Nadia Ferreira relationship timeline

Marc Anthony, 56, and Nadia Ferreira, 25, have been linked since 2022, shortly after she won the 2021 edition of the Miss Paraguay competition. Shortly after they originally met, in 2023, she announced that she was engaged to Marc Anthony. Their marriage was finalized in 2023 in Miami. In February, Nadia Ferreira announced that she was pregnant with her first child with Marc Anthony, and by Father’s Day of that year, their first child was born.

Our prenup prediction

Let’s not beat around the bush: we’re going to go ahead and guess that Marc Anthony and Nadia Ferreira signed a prenup before getting married. Why? Well, for one thing, Marc Anthony has gotten married several (four!) times. By now, he probably recognizes the value of getting a prenup, as he has an intimate familiarity with the fact that not all marriages work out, and laying out your wishes in a prenup is just plain smart.

Some clauses we think may (emphasis on “may”) be included in Marc Anthony’s prenup, given his status and fame:

  • Asset division (which assets are categorized as separate property and which are marital property)
  • Debt allocation (who is responsible for certain debts)
  • Alimony (whether or not alimony is awarded in the event of a divorce)
  • Lump sum clause (a.k.a., wealth equalization clause, which is where the wealthier party pays the less wealthy party a lump sum of money to balance out the wealth a bit)
  • Confidentiality clause (ensuring all private info stays private, given his fame)

What happens if Marc and Nadia get a divorce without a prenup?

Given that Marc and Nadia reside in Florida and, should they ever divorce, would likely file in Florida, too, then Florida laws would apply. Florida practices equitable distribution property division, which means that assets are divided equitably, not necessarily 50/50 (See Fla. Stat. § 61.075). A Florida judge has the discretion to determine what is equitable. When a Florida judge is deciding how to divide property in a divorce, they may consider many factors, including each spouse’s contributions to the marriage, their financial situation, the length of the marriage, career sacrifices, contributions to each other’s careers, keeping assets intact, contributions to assets, whether to keep the family home for children, any wasting of assets, and any other relevant factors to ensure fairness.

The takeaway? Without a prenup, the court would use its discretion and the list of factors laid out in Fla. Stat. § 61.075 to make an equitable division of assets based on the circumstances at hand. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to know exactly what would be the outcome. (Hint: This is why a prenup is important).

The bottom line on Marc Anthony’s prenuptial agreement

While we’re not sure whether or not Marc Anthony has a prenup with Nadia Ferreira, we’re pretty sure Marc is well aware of the effects of divorce and realizes the importance of a prenup. If so, it’s likely he included clauses such as asset division, alimony, lump sum, and confidentiality. Without a prenup, and in the event of a divorce in Florida, the Florida equitable distribution laws would apply, and the way assets are distributed will depend on the circumstances at the time and be at the discretion of a judge. However, Marc and Nadia appear to be going strong, so there’s no need to fuss over the prenup, as it likely won’t ever be used! Congrats to the happy couple!
