A wise man once said: “If you ain’t no punk, [a prenup is] somethin’ that you need to have / ‘Cause when she leave [you], she gon’ leave with half.” That wise man’s name? Kanye West. He did have a prenup with his ex, Kim, and it’s unclear whether or not he has one with his current wife, Bianca Censori. I mean… he is the one who said, “We want prenup, we want prenup!” So we hope he got one that is fair and reasonable for both him and Bianca! Let’s dive into all things Kanye West’s prenups.
Who is Kanye West?
Do we really have to go over who Kanye West is? Kanye West is one the most influential rappers of the 21st century, as well as a notable fashion designer, failed candidate for President of the United States of America, genius record producer, and the ex-husband of Kim Kardashian. He is arguably one of the most prominent artists of our time, but his more recent actions have drawn rightful criticism.
Kanye West’s relationship with Kim Kardashian
If you know Kanye West, then you also know about his relationship with Kim Kardashian. Let’s start with the infamous “Kimye” relationship history and work to the present from there. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian started dating in 2012 after having a “longstanding friendship.” They had a child, North, in 2013, and in 2014 got married in Florence, Italy. The rest is (quite literally) history.
They had a son in 2015, a daughter in 2018, and another son in 2019. Throughout their relationship, “Kimye” went through a variety of trials and tribulations, which included Kanye going on a Twitter rant against Wiz Khalifa and his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose; Kanye activating a highly publicized feud with Taylor Swift by name-dropping her in his song “Famous;” Kim being robbed at gunpoint in Paris, and Kanye dropping out of his tour. In February 2021, Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kanye, and in November 2022, they finally reached a divorce settlement. Kanye and Kim reportedly had signed a prenup before getting married, and it most likely is for this reason that their property was kept separate.
Kanye and Kim’s prenup
For those who don’t know: a prenup is an agreement that is signed by two people who are planning on getting married. It can outline each party’s assets during the marriage, debt ownership, inheritances, future property division, spousal support, and more. The purpose of a prenup is to help a couple clarify financial matters both during the marriage, upon death, and upon a potential divorce.
So, let’s talk Kimye’s prenup. It makes sense that Kim and Kanye signed a prenup, given their wealth and status. When they got married in 2014, they were both already wealthy. Kanye had just released My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which went triple platinum, and also was making a name for himself in the fashion world. Kim, on the other hand, was a star in Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which had extremely high ratings and led her to many other business opportunities. Both Kim and Kanye had a variety of assets that they wanted to protect, so getting a prenup was a smart move for them both.
According to People Magazine, Kim and Kanye’s prenup kept everything separate. This means no community property was created during the marriage–whatever they buy in the marriage remains separate property. For example, if Kim buys a house, that’s her house. If Kanye buys a car, that’s his car. Without a prenup, in California, that’s not the case. Instead, that theoretical house and car we just mentioned would be split 50/50 between the couple. Their “ironclad prenup” made sure to keep stuff separate. Smart move for them since they each have their own separate and distinct empires.
Kanye West’s relationship with Bianca Censori
After cycling through several new relationships post-Kim, Kanye West found love with Bianca Censori. Bianca Censori is an architectural designer and has been working with Kanye’s “Yeezy” brand since 2020. It is unclear when they began dating, but in early 2023, it was reported that they had gotten married in a “private ceremony.” Their marriage has been widely publicized and documented by paparazzi. It has recently been reported that Kanye and Bianca are possibly getting divorced. What could this mean for Kanye and Bianca’s respective financial situations? Well, depending on whether or not they signed a prenup, a divorce could mean a lot… or nothing much at all.
Did Kanye West and Bianca Censori have a prenup?
It’s unclear whether Kanye and Bianca have a prenup. In 2022, when Kanye West and Bianca Censori were considering getting married, Kanye West had a net worth of around $2 billion, including a brand deal with Adidas valued at around $1.5 billion. That’s A LOT of money. What does this mean? Well, since they live in California, if Kanye and Bianca didn’t sign a prenup, it would mean that every asset accumulated during their marriage from 2022 to the present day would be split 50/50. Again…lots of money on the line. Also, don’t forget Kanye is the man who said, “We want prenup…. We want prenup!” Plus, he signed a prenup with ex-boo Kim. So, with all of these things in consideration, it’s fairly likely Kanye got a prenup with Bianca. Side note: while Kanye still has a ton of money ($400 million), he did actually lose a lot of his net worth during the marriage after making antisemitic remarks.
Our prediction of Bianca and Kanye’s prenup
Given Kanye’s prenup history with Kim, there’s a good chance that Bianca and Kanye did something similar with their prenup and kept all assets and income separate. However, given that Bianca has (likely) a much lower net worth than Kanye and much less than Kim, too, there may be a clause or two in there to ensure Bianca gets something out of the marriage. For example, they may have included a lump sum clause which provides for a lump sum payment upon divorce to Bianca from Kanye. For instance, Beyonce and Jay-Z have a prenup clause that states if they divorce within two years of marriage, Jay-Z would need to pay Beyonce $10 million. Kanye and Bianca may have done something similar.
Bottom line on Kanye’s prenup(s)
We know for sure that Kanye had a prenup with Kim, but it’s unclear whether he has one with Bianca. His past prenup with Kim made sure to keep all assets separate, even assets accumulated during the marriage. This helped streamline his divorce with Kim and make sure that they walked away with their fair share. It’s fairly likely that he has a prenup with Bianca, given his net worth when he entered the marriage, which was a few BILLION. We’re just glad Kanye made an iconic prenup song for us to sing along to.
