Welcome to 2025, where Louisiana swamp boat tour guides can date musical superstars. If you’re a true Lana Del Rey fan, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that she has now been married to a Louisiana airboat tour captain for about a year. While he seems like a true gentleman from what we have seen, she may be wondering if he’ll still love her when she’s no longer young (she’ll always be beautiful). Plus, with a net worth of $30 million to protect… probably should’ve signed those nuptials. Lana, if you’re reading this, we’re happy for you, but here’s why we think you should have gotten a prenuptial agreement with your new beau.
Who is Lana Del Rey’s new husband?
Jeremy Dufrene is, according to airboattours.com, a “great airboat captain.” As an airboat captain, Dufrene is responsible for guiding tours through Louisiana’s swamps and marshes. (Sounds fun, right?). Dufrene previously worked at a chemical plant but decided that it wasn’t for him. We don’t blame you, Jeremy. So, he got his captain’s license and started guiding airboat tours. It seems like he made the right move — now he’s got a fun job and a marriage to Ms. Americana herself (Lana Del Rey, that is). I mean… he hit the lotto if you ask us.
What we know about Lana and Jeremy’s relationship
Lana Del Rey and Jeremy Dufrene were first seen together in 2019 when Lana Del Rey posted a photo on Facebook aboard one of Dufrene’s airboats. (Yes, they look adorable together). Then soon after, they were spotted holding hands backstage at one of Del Rey’s concerts. And in an older Instagram post, Lana Del Rey tagged Dufrene and referred to him as “my guy.” It’s safe to say that they were going steady at that time. Now, fast forward almost a year, and they’ve allegedly tied the knot. Apparently, Lana sang about their whirlwind wedding at Stagecoach, where fans were stunned to find out that Lana was a taken woman. However, the lyrics have led her fans to believe they wed without a prenup. The lyrics said:
What’s yours is mine / What’s mine is between you, me and Jesus / I’ve got nothing to lose except you and maybe my mind.
Take that how you will, but we think it could mean no prenup, too!
Why we think Lana should’ve considered a prenup
Although we don’t have the exact information on how much money Lana Del Rey and Dufrene each make, we can safely assume that Lana Del Rey’s earnings are greater than Dufrene’s. For example, one source estimates Lana Del Rey to have a net worth of around $30 million (NBD). On top of that, she has many sources of income, including proceeds from brand deals, merchandise sales, online streaming royalties, and sold-out tours, and likely more. Not to mention her LA estate(s), where she owns several pieces of real estate. Oh, and can’t forget about her beloved cats!
Now, with all of that to protect (a net worth of $30 million, music royalties, real estate, and her cats), we wholeheartedly believe Lana would have benefited from a prenup. Here’s why:
- Prenups can ensure that the assets that you bring into the marriage stay separate. For example, Lana’s LA bungalow.
- Prenups can ensure that the appreciation of assets you bring into the marriage stays separate. For example, if Lana’s bungalow appreciates in value, she can make sure that it stays hers.
- Prenups can ensure that income is kept separate. Lana is a money-making machine, and any future earnings she makes can be protected.
- Prenups can protect pets! Yes, you read that right. Her beloved cats can be sure to stay hers, even in the worst-case scenarios.
- Prenups can align spouses on expectations and goals, leaving the spouses more aligned, trusting, and on the same page.
As you may know from Lana’s music, she tends to have a darker view of love. If her love with Mr. Dufrene goes awry, she can ensure her wishes are met no matter what life throws her way.
What happens if they get a divorce without a prenup in Cali?
Because California is a “community property state,” any earnings made and assets accumulated during the marriage are generally split equally between the parties if there is no prenup, with few exceptions.
If Del Rey and Dufrene got married without a prenup (which it sounds like they did), Lana Del Rey’s property owned before the marriage (including all earnings prior to marriage) would generally be considered “separate property” and would not be included in the 50/50 division of “community property” that would occur in the event of divorce. However, the appreciation of Lana’s property may end up being considered community property and subject to a division in a divorce if it was due to marital efforts. For example, if Jeremy spends his funds to upkeep, renovate, or maintain her home, then it is possible that the appreciation on the home could be split 50/50.
As you can see, without a prenup, Lana’s property is uncertain for the future. The best way for her to have secured her future self was to get a prenup and ensure her assets stay separate.
The bottom line
Lana Del Rey and her new boo, Jeremy Dufrene, are cute and all, but we’re here to talk about prenups. We think Lana should have gotten one, given her hard work and successful career in music. Prenuptial agreements can provide certainty, clarity, and protection. They can do so much more than protect finances, too, such as align spouses on boundaries and expectations. But, at the end of the day, this is a personal decision and we’re happy for Lana and her newfound romance in the bayou. And, the good news? They can always consider a postnup if they so wish. Cheers!
