Franny and her husband, both from Venezuela and both 28-year-old architects, recently relocated to New Jersey. Upon arrival, they knew they wanted a prenup but had no prior knowledge of prenups in the States. They hoped to gain a thorough understanding of the process and to efficiently secure a prenup before getting married.

A Family Affair

Franny’s family was the first to bring up the idea of prenups to her. It was a matter of having a conversation with her husband to make sure they were on the same page. “Actually, it was a recommendation from my parents. They did it, and most of my family do it, so it was a suggestion. And I talked with my partner, and he was fine with it. He actually said that it was something that he would propose as well, so that’s why we did this,” Franny mentions.

With the recommendation of family and an upcoming wedding, Franny and her partner began their journey searching for the perfect prenup tool. However, their legal journey became difficult due to their unfamiliarity with prenuptial agreements in New Jersey.

“… we didn’t know how the process was. Since we’re not from here, we obviously know the process from back home [Venezuela], but here, we weren’t sure how would it work. We started doing research. We found lawyers were super expensive. And obviously, that was not something you’re looking for when you’re getting married,” Franny told us.
